Now that Teigan is nearly 18 months old, the girl has proven without a doubt that she’s a bookworm in the making. I am just loving this season of motherhood. Yep, even that demanding little whine to read the same book again and again. I must admit, I truly love it! Reading toddler books in different voices and watching her mimic me is always the silver lining to my day.

No Book is Off Limits
Everyday I let her choose a book from the bookshelf in her room. Books ranging from picture books to chapter books. Books passed down from cousins to her siblings and from her siblings to her. Each night she makes a mess as she picks through which book we should read and I let her. I actually enjoy watching her sieve through books. She’s learning that some books are more captivating than others. She’s also developing a preference discarding books with less colorful covers and opting for picture books with vibrant illustrations.
It doesn’t matter the time of day it is, if she wants a book read we’ll read it. Even if she picks a lengthy upper level book – I’ll entertain her as long as her attention will allow. This method of parenting often means I am left cleaning up a pile of books at the end of the day. But, it’s a small price to pay for the message I’m hopefully instilling in her.
Knowledge is Within Reach
Hopefully, I’m instilling a message that books are knowledge and knowledge is within our reach. I hope that she will continue to want me to read books to her until the day she is able to read on her own.
Books are Not Just For Bedtime
Teigan loves books but reading at bedtime was sometimes a struggle. It wasn’t because I didn’t want to but because I was tired. I work full time in a lab on my feet and then I come home to do all the mom things. By time I sat down by body would just begin to shut down. Queue the i provision.
I decided to start reading while she was taking a bath. This of course is a routine that she relentlessly holds me to and I love it. It works for us.
What Toddler Book Will We Read Next
I recently decided to give our bookshelf a refresh. I’ve read these books over and over with all three of my kids. I think it’s time to explore new books and authors. So each month I will add 5 new toddler books to her bookshelf. These are the 5 I’m adding:
- Every Little Thing
- Please, Baby, Please
- The Snowy Day
- Peekaboo Mornings
- Sofia Valdez, Future Prez
You can find all these books here
Do you have any book recommendations for next month? Drop it in the comments – and it just might make it on our bookshelf.
We read all throughout the day too! I love that my daughter is a little bookworm.
Right?! It’s the best! I want to see how many new books we can read in a year.
Reading to toddlers is always fun. We have also made a small bookshelf for our toddler.
Yes it truly is. What are some of you & your toddler’s favorites?
Aww that’s so good. Funny enough my kids enjoy my old books. They’ve been constantly asking me to read The Berenstain Bears books.
That’s awesome!!! I use to love The Bernstein Bears as a kid.
I like to start our day, either before or after breakfast, with story-time! I don’t really have a maximum either. Sometimes we just read one story and sometimes we read 4. We are like you and let the kids decide what they want to read from their bookshelf. I also LOVE getting books from the thrift store to add to our collection!
Oh, I didn’t even think about thrift stores for books – good idea!
