Instagram vs. Reality
I was trying to get that cute instagram kind of picture and my photographer (aka my 11 year old daughter) was on the same page but my husband was like – baby, let’s keep it authentic. So, here we are still together after a little more than a decade living together. It hasn’t always been easy – at one point or another we both wanted out of this marriage. So, why are we still together? Well, because although we both wanted out of this marriage at some point it was never at the same time. Seriously, we alternate who wants to bail and who wants to keep on fighting for us and it just works in the end.
Real Life Marriage
Anyone who tells you they have a perfect marriage is feeding you one big fat lie. The truth is that marriage is about two people learning to co-exist. The happily ever after that was fed to us as children in our bedtime fairytales doesn’t exist in real life love stories. No, my friends there’s only a work in progress and two people willing to put in the work.
I once read a story of a wife and husband who were married for 50 years. Before the wife got married her grandmother told her the secret to a happy marriage was to never argue. So, the wife would stay quiet and crochet dolls every time she got angry with the husband. While ill in the hospital she told her husband about her grandmother’s advice and asked her husband to get a box from her closet. The husband retrieved the box and opened it together. Inside the box were 2 crochet dolls and thousands of dollars. The husband was flattered thinking that his wife was only angry with him twice in their marriage but confused he asked her about the money. The wife replied – “the money is from selling all the dolls I made”
I always loved this story…no marriage is perfect!
