Fall is officially here and we are all for the fall activities. Last weekend we did our yearly trip to Tougas Family Farm for some family apple picking. Although, this year was different then the previous years (due to covid) we still enjoyed our trip.
What to Expect At Tougas Family Farm
Tougas Family Farm is usually jammed packed but not this year because of Covid its reservation only. Just like everywhere else, mask is required. Upon arrival we headed to the cashier barn where there was a portable sink setup to wash your hand with soap and water. All visitors were asked to be conscious of time and distance in the orchards as well as keep all members of your group within reaching distance.
Eating the fruit is NOT allowed this year. Last year Teigan was so content gnawing on the apple we picked for her. This year she picked her own apple and was disappointed when she discovered that she couldn’t eat it. But, we distracted her as much as we could and then she totally forgot about the apple when we went to the playground and walked through their petting zoo which are open. Honestly, we were also a bit disappointed not being able to test the new apples or apples in general. We did end up with some bitter apples but I have been using those for cooking – no waste here.
The tables at the playground had signs informing families when tables were sanitized and asking families to flip the sign over after using tables. The Farm Store and Kitchen are also open but operating a bit differently. We didn’t do those this year so I can’t say much about them.
What We Picked
We picked some nice golden delicious apples, tried for the first time some Ambrosia Apples and Nectarines. Yes, you read that right I never had a nectarine – EVER! As a kid the pit just turned me off. This year I was feeling adventurous and decided to try at least one nectarine. Oh, my gosh Sam I AM – I really liked them! They were so sweet and juicy and the pit wasn’t as bad as my 8 year old self thought. The nectarines finished before the apples so I think next year we may do 2 trips one for straight nectarines/peaches and one for apples. We did a combination this year which is allowed but make sure to put your nectarines on top of your apples or you’ll end up with a bunch of bruised nectarines.
